Quite
possibly the ultimate Bond villain, the head of SPECTRE (the Special Executive
for Counter-Espionage, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) has been pitted against
Bond on numerous occasions. His plans have always been foolproof, and yet
thwarted in the end by 007's quick wit, remarkable resourcefulness and amazing
gadgets. Although his face was not seen until his third movie appearance,
Blofeld was first played by Anthony Dawson and Hammer Horror star Eric Pohlman (uncredited)
in From Russia With Love. He re-surfaced in Thunderball, followed quickly by his
unmasked appearance in You Only Live Twice, played by Donald Pleasence. He was
then featured in both On Her Majesty's Secret Service (played by Telly Savalas
of Kojak fame) and Diamonds Are Forever (personified by Charles Gray, who had
previously appeared in You Only Live Twice). Although allegedly dispatched by
Bond in the pre-title sequence of For Your Eyes Only, Blofeld made one final
appearance in Never Say Never Again (played by Flash Gordon's Max Von Sydow),
Kevin McClory's remake of Thunderball.
